Annabelle is an upcoming American supernatural horror film directed by John R. Leonetti, written by Gary Dauberman, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is a prequel to 2014's The Conjuring about the real-life case of the haunted doll Annabelle, which scared away a family that took her in as a member of their household in 1970. The film stars Annabelle Wallis as Annabelle, Ward Horton as Roger, and Alfre Woodard as Mrs. Mullins. The film will be released worldwide on August 11, 2014 after being pushed back from its original July 3 release date. The film is rated R16 due to violence & terroristic threats by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Director John R. Leonetti claimed he decided to make the movie because of his son's fear of dolls, inspiring him to "make something up that was even more frightening than the truth. Something that was really, truly scary." In 1971, a young couple named Roger and Linda Duchovny move to the old Davenport farmhouse in Georgetown with their infant son Jeffrey. The house retains a dark past; shortly before they moved in, the original owners were killed in a fire. Eventually, Roger and Linda go away on a honeymoon and leave Jeffrey in the care of his grandparents, who live nearby. At this time they also choose to leave Annabelle with them. While out on their honeymoon, the couple meets an elderly woman named Mrs. Mullins, who warns them that she thinks the house is haunted. Annabelle, owned by the former occupant of the house, also insists that evil spirits do indeed haunt the dwelling. Mrs. Mullins appears to have a strange connection to these happenings. When Linda returns home after having got lost in the woods, she finds her son missing and presumes he has wandered off into the woods to find his grandparents' house where he had been left with Annabelle. Linda then finds Roger's face horribly mutilated by what appears to have been a bear attack. As she is about to be attacked herself by an unseen force, she retreats out of the house and runs into Mrs. Mullins, who drives her home. Roger is then attacked by the force during the night, but this time Linda is able to rescue him in time. Days later Linda receives a mysterious message in an envelope with her son's name on it in what appears to be blood, which urges her to speak to Mrs. Mullins at the old Davenport farmhouse. A detective by the name of Mullins (Michael Gardner) arrives at the scene of Roger's attack and takes Linda into custody when he learns that she has left Jeffrey alone in charge of Annabelle, calling his father a series of mean names when asked about him by the police officer when he goes out with friends for drinks at a bar.
